JL Herbert joined the Northspan team in summer 2024 as our operations manager, providing key support to day-to-day administration, as well as Northspan programs and initiatives in the region.
“I am an entrepreneur by nature,” shares JL. “I love puzzles and coming up with creative solutions to problems. I am a full-time student (online) and getting my bachelor’s in sociology and a certificate in nonprofit management. I have special training in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), as well as non-violent communication and mindfulness, and equality is very important to me. I have four kids, one dog, and one cat, so I tend to stay pretty busy.”
Here’s a quick Q&A with JL: 
How did you connect with Northspan?
After owning and running a business for just shy of 15 years, I was looking to get into a position that helped support small business owners and communities. Northspan’s goals and vision align with mine, so it seemed like a good fit.
What drew you to your current role?
Most of the time I’ve been a small business owner, I’ve been a part of different business groups in the area I was in and worked to run larger community events and smaller ones that promoted and encouraged shopping at local small businesses. I will always advocate for small businesses and encourage them to work together to support each other and help grow their community. My previous job I held was as the Lincoln Park Business Group administrator, where I got to connect with small business owners, help run events, and make plans for the future.
What’s been your favorite part of working with Northspan so far?
I recently enjoyed being able to attend the Basic Economic Development course with staff here and further my knowledge on building and supporting businesses and communities. I am enjoying getting to know the ins and outs of Northspan and my job. I’m also looking forward to learning more about all the things the Northspan team does and how it impacts our area.
